The Nicholas Family

A Family History

Collan Nicholas

Was born during 1821 and was baptised in Gwennap on 7th October of that year.

Collan married Catherine SINGS during 1843.

Catherine SINGS - was baptised on 7th July 1822 in Golant, St Sampson daughter of Richard Sings and Jane Truscott.

On 30th March 1851 during the census Collan [22] a Miner (Lead) and Catherine [28] were living in Pound Lane, Liskeard, Cornwall with their daughters Mary J [6], Ellen [5], Margaret [3] and Loveday [8 months]

During the census of 1861 Catherine [38] a Mine Agents Wife was still living in Pound Lane, Liskeard, Cornwall this time with her daughters Ellen [15], Loveday [10] and Catherine [8].

From the record of his death Collan arrived in New Zealand about 1878, but as yet I have found no other evidence to support apart from the record of Catherine his wife death which indicated the same year of arrival. After finding a record for his daughter Ellens marriage it would appear that the family went to Australia first as Ellen married in South Australia in 1867.

Collan died on 20th June 1890 in New Zealand and was buried on 22nd June 1890. Cause of death Senile Phthisis.

Catherine died on 23rd November 1910 in Thames, Waikato, New Zealand. She was buried on 29th November 1910. Cause of death Senile Decay.
