A Family History

Edith Mary Blanche Allan

Was born on December 7th 1894. She was baptised in St Thomas of Canterbury the Parsh Church in the Parish of Portsmouth in the County of Portsmouth on 6th January 1895. At the time of her baptism the family were living in Warblington Street, Portsmouth and her father Harry was a Butcher.

During the census of 1901 Edith [6] was living with her parents Harry [36] a Butcher Shopkeeper and Kate [35] at 98 High Street, Portsmouth. With them at this time were her siblings Harry [4], Arthur [2] and Vera [0]  and her half brothers  Lyndhurst [18] a Carriers Clerk and Reginald [17] a Butchers Journeyman and a cousin Nellie Treleaven [17] Dressmaker (Domestic).

In the 1911 census Edith [16] was living with her parents Harry [46] a Master Butcher and Kate [45] Assisting in The Business at 98 High Street, Portsmouth. Living with them were her sister Vera [10] and brothers  Harry [14] and Durrell (Arthur?) [12]. Also there was half brother George Maxwell (Reginald?) [27] a Traveller and Nellie Treleaven [27]  Assistant Domestic Duties.

Edith married a John Webb SHOTTON in St Thomas of Canterbury the Parsh Church in the Parish of Portsmouth in the County of Portsmouth on September 9th 1918. At the time of the marriage Ediths residence was 98 High Street, Portsmouth and her father Harry was a Shipping Contractor. John an engineer residence was in Newport, Mon. His father also a John Webb Allan was a Naval Architect and Surveyor. The marriage was witnessed by Harry Allan, John Webb Shotton, Kate Allan and Louisa Jane Shotton.

On September 29th 1939 Edith MB Shotton [Unpaid Domestic Duties], husband John W Shotton [General Labourer] and son Patrick A Shotton [At School]were living with her mother Kate now a widow [Butcher Shopkeeper] at 4 St Andrews Road, Portsmouth C.B., Hampshire, England.
