A Family History

Harry Allan

Was born about 1864 in Portsmouth, Hampshire.  

Harry married a Kate MAXWELL nee PASSELLS in St Thomas of Canterbury the Parsh Church in the Parish of Portsmouth in the County of Portsmouth on January 30th 1893. At the time of the marriage Harry a Butcher was living in the Parish of Portsmouth and Kate was living in St Pauls Parish of Portsea. Harry's father John Edward Allan was also a Butcher and Kates father George Passells was a Licensed Victualler. The marriage was witnessed by William Passells and Annie Louisa Allan.

Kate MAXWELL nee PASSELLS- was born on 3rd November 1866 at 127 Queen Street, Portsea Town, Portsea Island in the County of Southampton the daughter of George Passells a Licensed Victualler and Emma Varney. The birth was not registered until the 2nd May 1867.

In the 1871 census Kate was [4] living with her parents and three siblings at 127 Queens Street, Portsea - The Bulls Head.

In the 1881 census Harry [15] was living with his parents, 5 sisters and a brother at 29 Warblington Street, Portsmouth.

During the census of 1901 Harry [36] a Butcher Shopkeeper and Kate [35] were living at 98 High Street, Portsmouth. With them at this time were their children Edith [6], Harry [4], Arthur [2] and Vera [0]. Also with them were Kates sons from her first marriage Lyndhurst [18] a Carriers Clerk and Reginald [17] a Butchers Journeyman and a niece Nellie Treleaven [17] Dressmaker (Domestic).

In the 1911 census Harry [46] a Master Butcher and Kate [45] Assisting in The Business were living at 98 High Street, Portsmouth. Living with them were daughters Edith [16] and Vera [10], sons Harry [14] and Durrell (Arthur?) [12]. Also there was George Maxwell (Reginald?) [27] a Traveller and Nellie Treleaven [27]  Assistant Domestic Duties.

On September 29th 1939 Kate now a widow [Butcher Shopkeeper] was living at 4 St Andrews Road, Portsmouth C.B., Hampshire, England. Living with her was her daughter Edith MB Shotton [Unpaid Domestic Duties], son-in-law John W Shotton [General Labourer] and grandson Patrick A Shotton [At School].

It is possible that Kate died during the 3rd quarter of 1953 within the Portsmouth registration district.
