The Messem Family

A Family History

Henry Richard Messem

Was born about 1812.

Henry Richard married a Mary FAY on 28th July 1840 at St Faiths Church in the Parish of Havant in the County of Southampton. Charles Messem and Sarah Fay were the witnesses to the marriage.

Mary FAY - was most likely born during 1814 as she was baptised on 16th January 1815 at St Faiths Church, Havant. At the time of her baptism the family was living in Havant and her father was a Labourer.

On 30th March 1851 during the census Richard [37] an Agricultural Labourer and Mary [36] were living with their children George [7], Henry [5], William [3] and Ambrose [6 months] in Bedhampton, Havant, Hampshire. There were also 2 lodgers a John Pettis [27] and Charles Chambers [31] both Agricultural Labourers. Note: although one of the children is named Ambrose I have yet to find a child of that name born to Henry and Mary, the only one near tha age would have been Ann who was born in 1850 between July and August.

During the 1861 census on 7th April Henry [49] an Agricultural Labourer and Mary [47] were living with their children George [17] an Agricultural Labourer, Harry [15] a Shoemaker, William [13] and James [7] in Bedhampton Village, Havant, Hampshire.

On 2nd April 1871 during the cenus Henry R [60] a Gardener domestic and Mary [58] and their son James [17] a Baker domestic were living at Kings Head, Portsmouth Road, Havant, Hampshire. With them was an Eliza Ann Messam [3] a visitor.

Mary died during 1871 aged 57 years and was buried on 28th July 1871 at St Thomas' Church, Bedhampton.
