Ernest William GROWDON

633. Ernest William GROWDON, son of Ernest John Henry Oxby GROWDON and Emma Jane Hobson nee SAUNDERS, was born on 27 September 1907 (date from baptism record) in Devonport.

He was baptised on 17 October 1907 in the Parish of St James the Great, Devonport. At the time of the baptism the family were living at 3 Spencer Avenue. His father was in the Fleet Reserve. The ceremony was performed by C. de B. Durand.

Ernest William aged 3 appeared in the census on 2 April 1911 in 58 Tymawr St, St Thomas, Swansea, Glamorganshire, Wales. He was living with his parents Ernest John [28] whose occupation was Ship Cutter and Emma Jane [32]. In the household also was his step brothers Henry William Growdon [12], Charles Robert Growdon [12] both at School (these were actually his mother’s sons from her first marriage to William Henry Hobson)

Ernest William aged 16 years 1 month travelled from Plymouth England on 9 April 1924, arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on 24 April 1924 on the ship Cleveland. He was seeking employment.

Ernest William then travelled from Halifax to New York, New York, USA arriving on 6 June 1924 on SS Mount Clay. This was the first leg of his deportation from Halifax.

Ernest William travelled from New York to Southampton, England, arriving on 19 June 1924 on the ship Resolute. This was the second leg of his deportation from Halifax.

On 29 September 1939 Ernest W who was Incapacitated was in the Moss Side State Institution, Maghull, Nr Liverpool, West Lancashire R.D., Lancashire, England. (RG101/4968E/004/43 Letter Code: NZVZ)

Ernest William died in Rampton State Institution, East Retford, Nottinghamshire during 1940.
