Benjamin Marshallsay

Was born in 1821 in Weymouth, Dorset.

During the census of 1841 on 6th June Benjamin [15] was living with his parents Benn [55] and Catherine [50] and siblings Grace [20], Sarah [15], William [13], Samuel [10] and Mary [7] in Horsford Street MB and PB, Wyke Regis, Weymouth, Dorset. Also in the household was Catherines mother Sarah Talbot [70].

Benjamin married Mary DOWNTON on 28th August 1848 in the Parish Church, Melcombe Regis, Dorset.

Mary DOWNTON was born about 1818 in Chickerall, Dorset.

In the census of 1851 Benjamin [29] was living with his wife Mary [32] and daughter Emily [2] in Grove Buildings, Fordington, Dorchester. Benjamins occupation was given as BRIGHTSMITH JOURNEYMAN.

In the 1861 census Benjamin [39] was living with his wife Mary [42] and children Emily [12], William Alexander [9] and Arthur B [6] in Pease Lane, Holy Trinity, Dorchester. Benjamins occupation was given as SMITH & BELL ?? MASTER employing 1 man.

In the 1871 census Benjamin [50] was living with his wife Mary [53], son Arthur [16], his sister Mary A [36] a DRESSMAKER and Esther Ellis [30] a GENERAL SERVANT. Benjamins occupation at this time is LICENSED VICTUALLER at number 20 The Hard, Portsea.

In the census of 1881 Benjamin [59] was living with his wife Mary [62], son Arthur B [26], daughter-in-law Fanny [25] and Hannah Hussey [19] a GENERAL SERVANT at 30 The Hard Portsea (otherwise known as The Row Barge Tavern). Benjamins occupation was given as LICENSED VICTUALLER.

On February 25th 1885 at a session for transferring licenses in the Court-house, Penny-street, Portsmouth the certificate for the Ale-house Row Barge, The Hard was transferred from Arthur Benjamin Marshallsay to Benjamin Marshallsay. {Portsmouth Evening News February 26th 1885}

Mary died of Bronchitis and Apoplexy. Certified by Ernest HH Sall MRCS on 6th March 1887 at 30 The Hard, Portsea. Mary's Rank or Profession was given as Wife of Benjamin Marshallsay Licensed Victualler. The informant was an S Lumely and R Gatehouse was the Deputy Registrar. She was buried on 9th March in Portsea, St Mary.

Benjamin died of Chronic Hepatitis & Gastritis. Exhaustion. Certified by E.W.N. Sall MRCS on 2nd April 1888 at 30 The Hard, Portsea. Benjami's Rank or Profession was given as Licensed Victualler, his daughter Emily Coilebrook was the informant and ??? Armstrong the Deputy Registrar. He was buried on 6th April in Portsea, St Mary.
