A Family History

William Passells (Parcells)

Was born at 9.20 am on 6th July 1844 in North Street, Gosport, Hampshire, the son of George  Parcells a Mariner and Emma Varney. He was baptised privately at St Marys Church Alverstoke on 7th August 1844.

In the 1851 census William [6] was living with his parents and three siblings in Gilberts Yard, North street, Gosport.

In the 1861 census William [18] was living with his parents and siblings in North Street, Alverstoke, Gosport. His occupation was given as WATER MAN.

William married Emma Ann GILLIES on 15th June 1867 in Saint Mary's Portsmouth.

Emma Ann GILLIES - was possibly born during the 4th quarter of 1846 within the Bermondsey registration district.

During the 1871 census William [26] a MATE OF STEAM LAUNCH was a lodger at 5 Cumberland Street, Portsea. His wife Emily Ann[24] and daughters Helen Elizabeth [2] and Emily Kate [1] were also living with him here.

In the census of 1891 William [46] a LICENSED VICTUALLER was living at the Gloucester House, Portsmouth with his wife Emily A [44], and children Emily Kate [21], Charles J [15] both listed as REFRESHMENT ROOM ASSISTANT, George W [13], Arthur G [11], Bessie F [7], Lilian G [7] and Frank F [6]. Also living with the family was Williams sister in law Elizabeth H Billies [42] a REFRESHMENT ROOM ASSISTANT.

During the census of 1901 William [53] a widower whose occupation was given as LICENSED VICTUALLER was living at 17 High Street, Portsmouth with his daughters Ellen (Helen?) Beer [32], Bessie [19], Lillian [17] and sons George [23] a TELEGRAPHIST, Arthur [21] an ACCOUNTANTS CLERK, and Frank [16] . Also in the household were Williams nephew James Beer [10] and nieces Daisy [8] and Emily [6].

In the 1911 census William [67] a Hotel Manager was living at the Gloucester Hotel, St George Road, Portsmouth. With him at this time was his daughters Helen Beere [42], Bessie [29], Lilian [27], son Frank [26], granddaughter Helen Beere [18] all Assisting in Business, grandaughter Emily Beere [16] and a boarder Grattan Hardy [49] Private Means.

It is possible that William died during the 2nd quarter 1927 in the Catherington registration district.
